As a child, Chris thought he wanted to be a doctor, but a visit to a training ship convinced him that his future lay at sea. Jonathan on the other hand decided to study medicine but always had a hankering for faraway places, and had a rather romanticized view of the sea based on some of his father's reminiscences.
Fate would bring them together, and in an action-packed account, this book explores the way in which they re-visited their early aspirations, and decided if indeed they should have followed a different course. They pursued their careers, but always with the occasional thought that, maybe, they had been swayed by circumstances into the wrong direction.

Phillip Messinger was a navigating officer in the Merchant Navy who progressed on to spend 24 years at sea that included eight years as captain of global trading chemical tankers. After attaining rank of commander in the Royal Naval Reserves, he later worked in shipping management and as a management consultant. Now retired, he lives with his wife, Shirley, in Hampshire, England, near his children and their beautiful families.
