The Recovery Project Provides Notice of a Data Security Incident

Livonia, MI - [June 28, 2021] - The Recovery Project recently became aware of unauthorized access to an employee's email account. On March 8, 2021, The Recovery Project became aware of unusual activity in an employee's e-mail account. In response, The Recovery Project immediately secured the mailbox, and began working with a third-party forensic specialist firm to investigate the nature and scope of the incident. The investigation determined that there was unauthorized access by an unknown individual to the employee's e-mail account on February 23, 2021. The investigation, however, was not able to confirm access to any particular email or attachment.

On May 7, 2021, The Recovery Project determined file(s) were present in the e-mail account at the time of this event which contained certain information, including a combination of demographic, clinical and financial information such as name, address, email, date of birth, healthcare provider, dates and types of health care services, medical record number, medications, payment, payer name, and claims information of certain clients. The confidential information of a very small number of impacted individuals included a social security number or credit card number.

The Recovery Project takes these matters extremely seriously. When The Recovery Project became aware of the security issue The Recovery Project immediately took steps to secure the employee's e-mail account and begin an investigation. Additionally, while The Recovery Project goes to great lengths to protect client information entrusted to it, as part of its ongoing commitment to the security of information in its care, The Recovery Project is further evaluating its data security policies and procedures.

The Recovery Project is mailing notice to those whose information may have been contained within the e-mail account at the time of this event. In that notice, The Recovery Project is providing access to credit monitoring as well as guidance on how to protect against identity theft and fraud, should they feel it is necessary to do so. The notice encourages potentially impacted individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud, to review account statements credit reports, and explanation of benefits forms for suspicious activity and report any suspicious activity immediately to their insurance company, health care provider, or financial institution. The notice also provide additional information on obtaining a free credit report annually from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com, calling 877-322-8228, or contacting the three major credit bureaus directly at: Equifax, P.O. Box 105069, Atlanta, GA, 30348, 1-800-685-1111, www.equifax.com; Experian, P.O. Box 2002, Allen, TX 75013, 888-397-3742, www.experian.com; TransUnion, P.O. Box 2000, Chester, PA 19016, 800-680-7289, www.transunion.com. Potentially impacted individuals may also find information regarding identity theft, fraud alerts, security freezes and the steps they may take to protect their information by contacting the credit bureaus, the Federal Trade Commission or their state Attorney General. Instances of known or suspected identity theft should also be reported to law enforcement or the individual's state Attorney General.
