Independence Blue Cross Provides Notice of Data Privacy Incident

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Independence Blue Cross is addressing a data privacy incident that may have resulted in unauthorized access to certain personal information, for some of its members. To date, Independence has no evidence of misuse of the personal information; however, in an abundance of caution, Independence is providing notice of the incident to potentially affected individuals, as well as federal regulators.
On or around November 23, 2021, Independence identified suspicious activity related to the online portal used by providers for reimbursement for services. Upon discovery of this activity, Independence immediately began an investigation to determine what happened, including working with a leading forensic investigation firm to determine what information may have been affected. The investigation determined that an unknown actor logged into a provider account between November 16, 2021 and November 22, 2021 in an attempt to access the EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) information. Though the primary motivation behind the logins appears to be to access fund information, the unknown actor also had access to Provider Statements of Remittance.
Although the investigation is ongoing, it was determined that the unknown actor was able to access Statements of Remittance. As a result, the following types of information were accessible: name, member identification number, claim number, provider name, date of service begin date, date of service end date, month and year of birth, procedure code, total charges, covered charges, net allowance, deductible, co-insurance, and co-payment amount. This incident did not involve Social Security Numbers or financial account information.
These matters are very important to Independence. Upon discovery of the incident, Independence took a number of steps to secure the Independence provider portal. This included temporarily disabling the EFT system, reviewing and securing the potentially compromised accounts and reviewing existing policies and procedures. Independence is also working with federal law enforcement. Additionally, while Independence goes to great lengths to protect the personal information entrusted to the company, as part of its ongoing commitment to the security of information in its care, Independence is further evaluating data security policies and procedures.
Independence has begun providing notice of the event and is encouraging impacted members to review their Explanation of Benefits statements. Members should report any suspicious charges or activity immediately using the telephone number on the back of their member identification card. As an added precaution, Independence is also offering impacted members 24 months of complimentary access to credit monitoring services and identity protection services through Experian.
