64% of People Have a Positive Opinion About Software Developers, New Study by Idego Group

30% of the ordinary people don't have any opinion on software developers, and they don't know the nuances between software developers, software engineers, and IT support.
GDYNIA, Poland, April 28, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- 64% of ordinary people have a positive opinion about software developers, according to a new industry study by the Idego Group.
The research also discovered that the widespread belief that software developers are introverts who have trouble talking to other people is a myth.
The Idego Group survey polled a sample of 752 US citizens of all ages, genders, and incomes, excluding software developers themselves. The survey was conducted online in February 2022.
General opinion on software developers: 30% of people don't have any opinion on software developers. Among the ones that do have an opinion, 62% of people have a positive view, and only 12% of respondents expressed negative feelings.
Characteristics of a software developer: 42% of people consider software developers smart and intelligent, and 17% think they are great. Many of the respondents also consider developers competent and detail-oriented.
Software developers in society: 7.8% of respondents claim they are needed, and 5.7% think they are hardworking. In addition, opinions like "They are the backbone of my future." or "I think they are an integral part of a society growing in technology." are common.
Understanding what they do: Almost 1 in 4 people believe developers can hack into a social media account, but most are unsure, and 1 in 5 believe they can repair a computer.
Introverts: Contrary to the opinion promoted, e.g. in movies, only around 4.1% of regular people think software developers are introverts, and 4.3% believe they are nerds. On the other hand, 28% think software developers are communicative.
