PasswordManager.com Survey Finds 56 Percent of Cybersecurity Professionals Fear Hackers Will Use AI Tools to Steal Passwords

The launch of powerful AI tools such as ChatGPT and Bard have fueled concerns over password security and phishing attacks

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 15, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PasswordManager.com, a dedicated resource for password security and internet safety, has published a recent survey report that assesses sentiment regarding AI-driven tools such as ChatGPT and Bard among cybersecurity professionals. The study also shares insight into the threats that AI may pose to individuals and businesses. The study garnered responses from 1,000 cybersecurity professionals in the United States.

Survey results indicate that 56 percent of cybersecurity professionals say they are 'somewhat' or 'very' concerned about people using AI tools to hack passwords, and 58 percent say they are 'somewhat' or 'very' concerned about people using AI tools to create phishing scams. Likewise, 51 percent of respondents say AI tools have made it 'somewhat' or 'much' easier for hackers to steal passwords, and 52 percent say AI tools have made it 'somewhat' or 'much' easier to steal sensitive information.

With regards to the threat of hackers using AI tools to steal passwords, 36 percent of respondents say AI tools pose a 'medium-level' or 'high-level' threat to an average American individual, and 36 percent say AI tools pose a 'medium-level' or 'high-level' threat to an average American company. Likewise, with regards to the threat of hackers using AI tools to create phishing scams, 39 percent say AI tools pose a 'medium-level' or 'high-level' threat to individuals, and 36 percent say this poses a 'medium-level' or 'high-level' threat to companies.

This survey was commissioned by PasswordManager.com and conducted online by survey platform Pollfish on April 27, 2023. In total, 1,000 participants in the United States completed the full survey. All participants had to meet demographic criteria to ensure they were age 25 or older, were self-employed or employed for wages, had a household income of at least $50,000 a year, and had a career in security, software, information, or scientific or technical services. Additionally, respondents were screened to include only those who specifically identified their role as cybersecurity, worked full-time in this role, and were somewhat or very familiar with AI tools such as ChatGPT and Bard.
