The City of Lakewood Provides Notice of Data Event

October 10, 2023 (Lakewood, Washington) - The City of Lakewood ("Lakewood") announced that a data security event potentially affected the security of information related to certain individuals. Lakewood provided potentially affected individuals with notice, information about the event, and steps individuals can take to help protect their information.
On December 20, 2022, Lakewood identified suspicious activity in its computer network. Lakewood immediately launched an investigation into the nature and scope of the event.
Through the investigation, Lakewood learned that an unknown individual accessed certain systems on its network between November 14, 2022 and December 20, 2022, and viewed or downloaded certain files. Lakewood then conducted a comprehensive review of the impacted files to determine what information was affected and to whom the information related. This review was recently completed.
While the specific data elements vary for each potentially affected individual, the scope of information involved includes name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license number or state identification card number, passport number, financial account information, medical information, and health insurance information.
Lakewood is notifying potentially affected individuals by this posting, via written letter, and/or by notification on its website. Lakewood takes this event and the security of information in its care seriously. Upon becoming aware of this event, Lakewood took steps to swiftly investigate, respond, and assess the security of its systems. Lakewood is also reviewing and enhancing its technical safeguards, as well as its information security policies and procedures. Lakewood also corresponded with federal law enforcement.
