Carl Buddig and Company Provides Notice of Data Security Incident
Friday, June 21, 2024
HOMEWOOD, IL - June 18, 2024 - Carl Buddig and Company ("Buddig") is notifying certain individuals of a data security incident that may impact the privacy of a limited amount of personal information. Buddig is unaware of any misuse of individual information and is providing notice to potentially affected individuals out of an abundance of caution.
In May 2023, Buddig became aware of suspicious activity involving the encryption and inaccessibility of certain computer systems. Buddig quickly took steps to confirm the security of its computer systems and with the assistance of external cybersecurity specialists, began a comprehensive investigation to determine the full nature, scope, and impact of the activity. As part of Buddig's initial response, Buddig also promptly notified federal law enforcement. The investigation determined that Buddig was the victim of a sophisticated cyberattack and an unauthorized actor likely accessed and/or acquired certain files stored on Buddig's computer systems between April 10, 2023, and May 29, 2023. With the assistance of a third-party data analytics specialist, Buddig subsequently conducted a thorough and time-consuming review of the files likely affected to determine whether they contained any sensitive information and to whom the information relates. Because this review was unable to locate full contact information for potentially affected individuals, Buddig conducted a subsequent review to identify mailing addresses for notification. Upon completion of this review, Buddig worked to notify affected individuals.
Buddig has no indication that the data affected by this incident has been used to commit any identity theft, fraud, or other harm to individuals. However, Buddig is providing notice of this incident out of an abundance of caution because the information that is present in the affected files may include individuals' Social Security numbers, driver's license or state identification card numbers, passport information, financial account information, medical information, biometric information, electronic signatures, and health insurance information.
Buddig treats its responsibility to safeguard information in its possession as an utmost priority. Upon learning this incident, Buddig promptly took steps to secure its systems, began a comprehensive investigation, and have been working diligently to provide individuals with an accurate and complete notice. As part of the commitment to the privacy and security of personal information in its care, Buddig continues to review and enhance its existing policies and procedures relating to data protection and security. Buddig has also implemented additional security measures to mitigate risk associated with this incident and to help prevent similar future incidents. Buddig is also providing notice of this incident to potentially impacted individuals and to regulators where required.
Buddig sincerely regrets any inconvenience this incident may have caused. Although there is no evidence of any actual or attempted misuse of personal information, as a general best practice, Buddig encourages individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing account statements and monitoring free credit reports for suspicious activity over the next 12 to 24 months. Any questionable activity detected should be reported to the associated insurance company, health care provider, or financial institution immediately.
Individuals seeking additional information regarding this incident can call Buddig's dedicated assistance line at: 833-931-5222, Monday through Friday from 8 am - 8 pm CST (excluding major U.S. holidays). Individuals may also write to Buddig directly at: 950 West 175(th) Street, Homewood, IL 60430.
