SRI International Researcher to Discuss Smart Grid Technology for Renewable Energy Sources at Greentech Media Conference
Tuesday, November 03, 2009

MENLO PARK, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ --

WHAT: Charles Ortiz, Ph.D., program director in SRI International's
Artificial Intelligence Center (AIC), will be a panelist at the
upcoming Greentech Media conference: The Networked Grid. The
conference will provide insights to the electric power industry
as the power transmission and distribution market grows with the
             addition of renewable energy sources.

During the afternoon panel, Networking Renewable Energy:
Integrating Utility-Scale Renewables, Storage and Distributed
Generation Resources at Mass Scale, Dr. Ortiz will discuss how
smart grid technology can integrate energy generation, storage,
             and intelligence.

His presentation will focus on some of the technical challenges
that arise when developing such massive systems for utilities. He
will explain how designs for such complex systems involve a host
of tradeoffs and that individual components, such as renewable
energy, distributed control, and demand response, cannot be
             developed in isolation.

    WHEN: Wednesday, November 4, 2009, from 4:45 - 6:00 p.m.

    WHERE: PG&E headquarters, auditorium
             77 Beale Street
             San Francisco, CA 94105

WHO: Charles Ortiz, Ph.D., is a program director in the Artificial
Intelligence Center (AIC) at SRI International. In this role, he
leads a group of researchers in the study and development of
multiagent and multirobotic systems. Among the areas with which
his research group is engaged in is the development of complex
systems that can operate both autonomously and collaboratively
with each other and with humans. This includes the development of
distributed algorithms which can self-organize and adapt to novel
and problem situations as well as support effective human
interaction and understanding. In addition, Dr. Ortiz works with
SRI's Center of Excellence in Energy, which enables
multidisciplinary efforts at the institute to address important
energy problems, from developing alternative energy sources to
using conventional resources in a more sustainable manner.

Dr. Ortiz received his Ph.D. in computer and information science
from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.S. in computer
science from Columbia University. His undergraduate S.B. degree
is from MIT. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard
University where he conducted research in collaborative
multiagent systems. Dr. Ortiz has served as an Adjunct Professor
in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Berkeley and is a
Visiting Scholar at Stanford University. He is the author of
numerous publications including the book Distributed Sensor
Networks: A Multiagent Perspective and Collaborative Multiagent
Systems (for MIT Press, in preparation).
