CoolIT's advanced liquid cooling technology powers record-breaking performance in El Capitan, the first supercomputer to surpass 2 exaflops.
CALGARY, AB, Nov. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- CoolIT Systems (CoolIT), the world leader in liquid cooling systems for AI and high-performance computing cools El Capitan, the world's most powerful supercomputer and the first to surpass the 2-exaflop barrier.
CoolIT is rapidly becoming the standard for liquid cooling in large, complex systems. El Capitan surpasses Frontier, the previous Top500 leader since May 2022 now holding second place, which is also cooled by CoolIT's direct liquid cooling technology.Deployed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in collaboration with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and AMD, El Capitan was recognized as the world's most powerful supercomputer during the 64th edition of the TOP500, announced at SC24 in Atlanta, Georgia. El Capitan achieved a record-breaking High Performance Linpack of 1.742 exaFLOPs and a total peak performance of 2.79 exaFLOPs.
Key to achieving this groundbreaking performance is CoolIT's patented Split-Flow(TM) technology. This technology is embedded in the single-phase, direct liquid cooling loops that provide efficient cooling to more than 11,000 compute nodes within the 87 HPE Cray EX255a racks.
"CoolIT has a proud history of cooling the world's fastest and most advanced supercomputers," said Patrick McGinn, COO at CoolIT Systems. "El Capitan represents a breakthrough in computing, ensuring national security and tackling critical challenges in science and technology. We are honored to deliver the most reliable liquid cooling solutions to power this vital work."
CoolIT is rapidly becoming the standard for liquid cooling in large, complex systems. El Capitan surpasses Frontier, the previous Top500 leader since May 2022 now holding second place, which is also cooled by CoolIT's direct liquid cooling technology. Beyond its unmatched computational power, El Capitan is designed to address critical issues such as nuclear stockpile stewardship, environmental threats, and healthcare research.
