Cutting-edge badges prepare Scouts for success in technology, marking a new era of digital adventure

IRVING, Texas, Oct. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- For over a century, Scouting America has inspired youth to explore, lead and grow. This fall, Scouts can take that spirit into the digital age with new merit badges in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. Now available through the Scouts BSA program, these badges empower young people to master the skills of tomorrow alongside expert counselors, preparing them to thrive in an ever-evolving world.

With these new badges, Scouting America isn't just keeping pace -- it's leading the charge in preparing youth for tomorrow's world. As technology reshapes how we live, learn and connect, Scouting empowers young people to become creators, innovators and responsible digital citizens.

"Scouting has always been about preparing young people for life," said Roger Krone, president and CEO of Scouting America. "Today, that means more than mastering outdoor skills -- it's about understanding the digital world and its impact on our lives. The new AI and Cybersecurity Merit Badges give Scouts the tools and ethical foundations to navigate and lead in a rapidly changing world shaped by technology."

With these new badges, Scouts are empowered to build vital digital skills and envision themselves as future leaders -- whether as cybersecurity analysts, AI engineers, software developers or digital forensics experts -- opening doors to some of the most dynamic and impactful careers of tomorrow.

"These aren't just new badges -- they're a leap into the future," said Krone. "We're equipping Scouts with skills that unlock career opportunities, foster digital citizenship and cultivate curiosity about how the world works, online and offline."

What Scouts Will Learn:

-- Artificial Intelligence (AI) Merit Badge: The new AI Merit Badge gives
Scouts a hands-on introduction to one of today's most transformative
technologies. Scouts discover what AI is, how it is used in everyday
life and learn the basics of algorithms and automation. They also tackle
real-world challenges such as spotting deepfakes, understanding
algorithmic bias and exploring how AI is impacting jobs and society.
Beyond technical skills, the badge emphasizes critical thinking about
the ethical questions surrounding AI, including data privacy and
        responsible innovation.
-- Cybersecurity Merit Badge: The Cybersecurity Merit Badge gives Scouts a
comprehensive introduction to digital security, preparing them to face
the challenges of today's connected world. Scouts learn to identify a
range of cyber threats, from viruses to social engineering attacks, and
recognize common vulnerabilities in systems and applications. They
develop practical skills such as creating strong passwords, using
firewalls and antivirus software and understanding encryption. The badge
also highlights responsible online behavior, teaching Scouts how to
safeguard personal information and prevent cyberbullying.
