BOSTON, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts
today was joined by Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Comcast to announce the
recipients of its annual awards, recognizing community members and
organizations who have served as beacons of inspiration for the Greater Boston
community. Comcast, whose top New England executive, Kevin Casey, is serving
as Chairman of the Urban League's 2008 Awards Gala, also announced a $25,000
Comcast Foundation grant to support career training services in the Urban
League's Roxbury headquarters.
The Urban League's 2008 honorees, to be celebrated at the organization's
gala in Boston on April 5, include Kai Leigh Harriott, the young Dorchester
girl who emerged as a heroic model of forgiveness and compassion when she
publicly forgave the man who had shot her in 2003 at age three on her family's
front porch, robbing her of the use of her legs. Other 2008 Urban League
honorees include Massachusetts General Hospital, the Boston Celtics and
Monster.com, which are each being recognized for their own strong
contributions to the local community.
"These awards are our way of recognizing the shining lights in the
community who represent the very best of Greater Boston," said Darnell
Williams, President and CEO of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts.
"We're excited to announce this year's winners as we prepare to honor them at
our annual gala, and we're so grateful to Comcast for helping us celebrate and
for its generous support for our Employment Resource Center. One of the
hallmarks of a great city is the willingness of its business community to lend
a hand to those in need, so I want to thank Comcast for stepping up in such a
big way."
"The Urban League Awards Gala is one of the highlights of the year, and
it's exciting to know that we'll be celebrating these true community leaders
this year," said Mayor Menino. "The City of Boston is full of heroes, and I
want to thank the Urban League for helping us see the best of the best. I also
want to thank all the great sponsors for supporting the Urban League, and for
investing in the future of our city."
"We are proud to stand with the Urban League and Mayor Menino to recognize
the achievements of these leaders in our community," said Kevin Casey,
President of Comcast's NorthCentral Division. "In our national partnership
with the Urban League, we have seen the organization continually raise the bar
on meeting the educational, economic and social needs of local communities.
Kai Leigh and her mother, Tonya David, Massachusetts General Hospital, the
Boston Celtics and Monster.com all have shown the same commitment and vision
that makes the Urban League such an important part of civic life here in
Boston."
The 2008 award winners announced today include:
-- Kai Leigh Harriott and her mother, Tonya David, will receive the Lee F.
Jackson Achievement Award for bringing the community together, despite
her tragic injury from urban violence.
-- Massachusetts General Hospital will receive the Corporate Leadership
Award for working with the Urban League to address health care
disparities.
-- The Boston Celtics' "Heroes Among Us" program will receive the Mollie
Moon Award for its impact in promoting volunteerism in the community.
-- Monster.com will receive the President's Award for working with the
Urban League to increase access to employment opportunities and career

The Urban League's 16th Annual Awards Gala will be held on Saturday, April
5 at the Seaport World Trade Center Boston. The emcee for the evening will be
award-winning journalist Sarah Zapp from CN8, The Comcast Network. The gala,
which is attended by a who's-who list of area VIPs every year, will include a
silent auction hosted by Mayor Menino and a live performance by the legendary
R&B group The Temptations, featuring Dennis Edwards. All proceeds will benefit
the programs and services of the Urban League.
