Intersections launches major ad campaign in Austin to highlight problem of identity theft

AUSTIN, Texas, May 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Intersections Inc. (Nasdaq: INTX), a leading global provider of consumer and corporate identity risk management services, today announced the launch of a major ad campaign in Austin to help educate consumers about identity theft. As part of the initiative, Intersections is providing Austin area firefighters, The International Association of Firefighters, Local 975, complimentary subscriptions to its most comprehensive identity theft service, Total Protection.

"Identity theft is a real and ever-growing problem that affects millions of Americans," said Michael Stanfield, chairman and CEO of Intersections. "Just last year, 8.4 million U.S. adults and over 880,000 Texans were victims of identity theft. People need to protect themselves not only from physical crime and the hazards of fire, but from identity theft and cyber crimes. That is why we are honoring the firefighters of Austin with this protection. They are on the front lines to protect the Austin community, and we think they deserve to be protected from identity crimes."

The cost of Identity Guard's(R) comprehensive identity theft service, Total Protection, is $14.99 per month, making the value of a one-year subscription for Austin's 1,000 firefighters nearly $180,000.

According to a recent Federal Trade Commission report, Texas was found to be second in the nation in identity theft complaints. Identity Theft 911, a leading provider of identity theft restoration and education services, recently released a report that stated Texas has one of the highest rates of growth in identity theft and highest per capita incidence of identity theft.

Mr. Stanfield added, "Our research indicated that more than 80 percent of the Austin market makes purchases online. In addition, we found that Austin citizens conduct business and personal transactions online far more than the national average, making them particularly vulnerable to identity theft. This information confirmed that the Austin market was an ideal place to launch our new campaign."

"The preservation of life and property is the central mission of the Austin Fire Department," stated Stephen Truesdell, President of the Austin Fire Fighters Association, Local 975. "We are grateful to Intersections for benefitting our local firefighters with these invaluable services and lessons on how to better protect our personal information."

"This community has been affected by identity theft, and the Austin firefighters are proud to serve as examples by taking action to protect ourselves and our families in this important category," he added.

Identity Guard(R) Total Protection helps consumers protect their credit from identity theft, and also provides 360 degree protection on the Internet, on PCs, or when traveling, 24 hours a day,7 days a week.
