Project Anchor Phase I complete with secure transmission of patient data from hospital EMR to web-based PHR
MALVERN, Pa., and PAWTUCKET, R.I., May 8 /PRNewswire/ --InterComponentWare
Inc. (ICW), a global leader in eHealth technology solutions and Memorial
Hospital of Rhode Island (MHRI) announced yesterday the completion of the
first phase of Project Anchor, an initiative led by Dr. Charles Eaton,
Director of the Center for Primary Care and Prevention, which tests an eHealth
enabled patient-centered medical home model of care delivery.

Phase I of the multi-year Project Anchor involved a group of 200 diabetes
patients from Memorial's Family Care Center and the transfer of key patient
data from MHRI's GE Centricity Electronic Medical Record (EMR) through the ICW
Professional Exchange Server (PXS) to the web-based ICW LifeSensor(R) Patient
Health Record (PHR). The PXS is the vehicle by which data from any provider
system can be securely communicated to the LifeSensor PHR and it is this
element that makes Project Anchor substantially more robust than other PHR
implementations.
With the information available in LifeSensor, patients can review their
health data and begin tracking key measurements -- such as glucose, blood
pressure, and weight -- on a routine basis. The purpose of the project is to
help patients take charge of their health and communicate regularly with their
primary care physician, who serves as team leader in managing the patient's
comprehensive care, using data from all care providers interacting with the
patient.
In celebrating the successful completion of Phase I, Jeremy P. Coote, CEO
of ICW remarks, "Establishing the secure communication of historical data from
an existing EMR and from other provider systems to a web-based tool for
patient review is a critical first step in providing a conduit for patients
and their care givers to achieve better medical outcomes and be actively
engaged in their care delivery. ICW has successfully implemented the secure
transfer of patient and provider data via PXS to our LifeSensor PHR in Europe
and is pleased to be achieving similar milestones in the U.S."
Phase II of the project, which gets underway immediately, will focus on
sending discrete patient data elements from Centricity to LifeSensor (e.g.,
medication history, lab results), two-way secure emailing between patients and
providers, and automatic uploads to LifeSensor from glucometers and blood
pressure devices. Dr. Eaton notes that "Phase II is where our pilot group of
patients and providers will begin to really experience what it means to have
access to a web-based PHR. Many patients are savvy web users and will use the
tool with ease. For those who are not as familiar, we've established a
patient education room, here at the hospital, with computers and patient
navigators, individuals who can provide hands-on training. We predict strong
results from the diabetes test group and are already considering making this
available to other chronic disease groups. Our goal, though, is to give all
patients access to LifeSensor."
Recognized at today's celebratory event were Jerome McMurray, Project
Coordinator and MHRI Information Systems Department members: Lisa Maher,
Director of IS; Mark Kent, Software Developer, Dennis Boisclair, Network
Administrator; George Kulz, Programmer; and Joseph Wroblewski, Director of
Operations & Technical Services, Abacus Health Solutions.
Phase II of Project Anchor gets underway immediately and is scheduled to
be completed by the end of the year.
