Cheers Magazine Announces Its 2008 Cheers Beverage Scholarship Winners
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

NORWALK, Conn., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Cheers, the beverage magazine for full-service restaurants and bars, recently announced its Cheers Beverage Scholarship winners from the Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. For the past three years, Cheers, a publication of The Beverage Information Group, has given a scholarship to outstanding students at Johnson & Wales' College of Culinary Arts, who are enrolled in the college's Beverage Concentration. This year's winners, Valerie Rogers of Santa Fe, Ariz., Thomas Mottl of Alliance, Neb., and Casey Wright of Boonton Twp., N.J., each received their scholarships during an awards presentation on April 24 at the College of Culinary Arts. The three will share in the $2,500 scholarship that is awarded to students on the basis of merit and faculty recommendations.

Each winner is headed on a very different career path within the beverage industry. Rogers says she hopes to use her beverage education to create unique wine and dessert pairings; Mottl plans to open a brewpub post graduation; and Wright wants to be a liaison between wineries and wholesalers and is planning to study abroad for sommelier training.

"We are thrilled to be able to help students advance their studies in the beverage industry, which offers so many interesting and diverse career options," says Charles Forman, The Beverage Information Group's senior vice president and group publisher. "The Cheers Beverage Scholarship winners we have met over the years are remarkably focused young individuals with unique skill sets."

Johnson & Wales' beverage program is the largest concentration in the university's hospitality college with 188 students, an enrollment increase of 18 percent over last year, according to Ed Korry, Johnson & Wales' department chair of beverage and dining services. Students at the Providence, R.I., campus can choose to earn the optional beverage concentration within their bachelor's degree program.
