Officials gather at ED in '08 Blogger Summit to put forth solutions to fix schools
WASHINGTON, May 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Education leaders joined at the inaugural ED in '08 Blogger Summit today calling on the presidential candidates to address education reform and give students the skills they need to compete in a global economy. The unlikely team, former DNC Chairman Roy Romer and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, crossed political lines to encourage the audience to continue using the internet and grassroots organization to change the discourse on education reform. Content from the ED in '08 Blogger Summit is available at www.EDin08.com/bloggersummit.
"I'm proud to work together with ED in '08 to create a national dialogue on how to reform our failing education bureaucracies," said Newt Gingrich. "In order to compete globally with China and India, we need bold solutions to confront the failure of education that is cheating our children and putting America's economy and national security at risk."
The nation's students are falling behind their international peers. In a 2006 international assessment America's 15 year-olds ranked 25th in math and 21st in science out of 30 participating countries.
"Currently, students in other countries are excelling and improving faster than students in the United States and have an advantage in obtaining the best jobs of the 21st century," said Roy Romer, Chairman of ED in '08. "That is why it's so important for us to be here today, crossing political lines, urging the presidential candidates to begin discussing how they plan to reform America's public schools. We care about our future, and the candidates need to show us that they do as well."
Economists have long linked economy to education, estimating that if America could increase the cognitive skills of its students to the level of the highest performing nations over the next decade, our Gross Domestic Product would grow by an additional 4.5% over the next 25 years, an amount that is equal to what we currently spend on K-12 public education.
"The one issue that the candidates are not addressing is education," said Chris Gabrieli, author of Time to Learn, which looks at education reform by fundamentally redesigning the school day. "It is time to have a serious discussion in this country, among the candidates and our communities, about how to change our educational system so that all students have a real opportunity to learn and to achieve."
ED in '08 is a national, nonpartisan campaign that calls on all the presidential candidates to propose plans to ensure that American students will graduate from high school with the skills needed to compete in a global economy. For more information, log onto www.edin08.com.
