Poland, U.S., Brazil and Philippines Win Computer Programming Gold in 2008 TopCoder Open

120 TopCoder Members Representing 30 Countries Gathered in Las Vegas for Recognition, Honors and Share of $260,000 in Prize Money

LAS VEGAS, May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Programming athletes from Poland, the U.S., Brazil and the Philippines were named champions in the Algorithm, Design, Development, Studio Design and Marathon Match events of the 2008 TopCoder Open at the Mirage Resort in Las Vegas this week. Tomasz Czajka of Poland took first place in the $25,000 Algorithm competition; Tim Roberts of the United States finished with top honors in the Software Design event, earning $25,000 for his win; the Software Development champion was Romano Silva of Brazil, who won $15,000; Studio Design champion Nino Rey Ronda of the Philippines took the $15,000 purse for the graphics design track; and the Marathon Match $15,000 prize went to Przemyslaw Debiak of Poland. In all, more than $260,000 in prizes was at stake for the 120 competitors from around the world. Sponsors and patrons of the 2008 TopCoder Open included AOL, BT, Lilly, Betfair, VeriSign and the U.S. National Security Agency. Czajka, known to the TopCoder Community by his handle 'tomek', won the Algorithm event with a score of 746 points. Czajka was the only competitor to successfully attempt the hard level problem. Petr Mitrichev, aka 'Petr' from the Russian Federation, placed second; and third place went to Eryk Kopczynski, aka "Eryx", also of Poland.

Tim Roberts, aka 'Pops,' of the United States prevailed in the Software Component Design competition with Codrut-Lucian Lazar, 'Luca' of Romania and Celsus Kintanar, 'ShindouHikaru', of the Phillippines placing second and third.

The Software Development champion, Romano Silva, aka 'romanoTC' of Brazil overcame second place finalist Ninghai Huang, 'PE', of China and Jerrish Varghese, 'cyberjag', of India.

The TopCoder Studio Graphic Design winner was Nino Rey Ronda, aka 'oninkxronda', of the Philippines with Maureen, 'sweetpea', of Indonesia and Arif Widianto, 'oton', also of Indonesia, rounding out the top finishers.

In the Marathon Match, Przemyslaw Debiak, aka 'Psyho', of Poland bested Tuomas Pelkonen, aka 'tpelkone', of Finland and Bohua Zhan, aka 'bhzhan', of the United States.

This tournament marked the first time the individual tracks performed as a microcosm of the entire TopCoder process. Studio, design and development combined to develop an entire application in three days. The winning Studio submission from 'oninkxronda' designed the entire front end application, which utilized a data feed designed by 'Pops' and implemented by 'romanoTC'.
