TORONTO, Oct. 13, 2017 /CNW/ - More than 6,000 Canadian changemakers across the country participated in the first-ever SingularityU Canada Summit. Hosted at the Evergreen Brick Works and livestreamed to 42 communities across the country, the Summit featured Canadian and international innovators, who are tackling the world's biggest challenges.

"In launching the SingularityU Canada Summit this year, we sought to capitalize on Canada's opportunity to become a driver of impact and embrace the accelerating technological advances that are transforming our world," said Oren Berkovich, CEO, SingularityU Canada Summit. "With our diversity and drive for innovation and impact, Canada is uniquely positioned to take on the world's biggest challenges. We have the talent, the passion, and the skills to lead and it is time the world knew."

As evidence of Canada's ability to lead the world, Summit keynote Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, Co-Founder of Singularity University and Founder of the XPRIZE, took to the stage to announce that the 2017 XPRIZE would be a call to tackle Alzheimer's. Further, he announced that Canadian Visioneer and UBC MD/PhD student, Philip Edgcumbe, would lead the team.

Building on the energy of the Summit and the desire of participants to continue the conversation, Summit organizers announced both the first Canadian SingularityU Executive Program and an open call for cities to host the next Summit.

About the SingularityU Canada Summit
SingularityU Canada Summit is the premier launch event of a new movement in Canada seeking to bring together the leading Canadian and International thought leaders to inspire Canadians to shape the Future of Canada and drive global impact. A forum for true debate and uncommon conversations about how technologies like artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and digital medicine will impact the way we live and work.

The inaugural SU Canada Summit took place on October 11 - 12 in Toronto, Ontario and will move to different host cities each year.

Building the Canadian platform of Singularity University was made possible when a grassroots movement of Canadian SU alumni brought together a visionary group of founding members including ATB, BMO, CIBC, Canadian Medical Association, CN, Deloitte, FairVentures, Goodmans LLP, Google, the Government of Ontario, RBC, Rogers Communications, Scotiabank, Suncor, TMX and TD Bank Group. Together this initial group is on a mission to share SU's exponential mindset and bold thinking with Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

The group is working closely with leading edge innovation hubs, academic institutions, and NGOs across the country to create a pan-Canadian network of partners who wish to come together and discuss Canada's role in shaping our collective future.

Singularity University (SU) is a global learning and innovation community using exponential technologies to tackle the world's biggest challenges and build an abundant future for all. SU's collaborative platform empowers individuals and organizations across the globe to learn, connect, and innovate breakthrough solutions using accelerating technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital biology. A certified benefit corporation headquartered at NASA Research Park in Silicon Valley, SU was founded in 2008 by renowned innovators Ray Kurzweil and Peter H. Diamandis with program funding from leading organizations including Google, Deloitte, and UNICEF.
