/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory - Government life support for local media: April 17 Panel discussion in Ottawa to debate pros, cons/

OTTAWA, April 3, 2018 /CNW/ -

What: Everyone agrees that local media are vital organs of democracy, yet shrinking finances have forced many local news organizations to close their doors.

The Feb. 27 federal budget pledged $10 million a year for five years to support local news media.

That was $10 million too much, according to some. Others say not enough. News Media Canada, the industry lobby group, had been looking for $350 million in a revamped Canadian Periodical Fund.

A free panel discussion will address the pros and cons of government financial support for what many observe is a dying feature of the Canadian media landscape.

Who: National Post columnist Andrew Coyne, who slams the idea of government support for media, and Bob Cox, publisher of The Winnipeg Free Press and chair of News Media Canada, will lead the discussion. Susan Harada, head of the journalism program at Carleton University, will be moderator.

Organized by the Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom in collaboration with Canada 2020, and with the support of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.

When: April 17 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm

Where: Canada 2020 Studio, 35 O'Connor St., Suite 302

Admission is free but please register through Eventbrite:

The Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom works in partnership with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, with the Canadian Bankers Association providing support as a presenting sponsor.
