Texas Employment Report: Overall Worker Confidence Declines; More Workers Concerned About Economic Situation
Friday, July 18, 2008

DALLAS, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Texas Employee Confidence Index decreased 2.2 points to 49.2 in June, according to the latest Spherion(R) Employment Report. The monthly survey of Texas workers, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, indicates that more workers believe the economy is getting weaker and that fewer jobs are available.

Results from the Texas Employment Report:

-- Seventy-one percent of workers believe that the economy is getting weaker, increasing eight percentage points from the previous month.

-- Fifty-six percent of Texas workers are confident in their ability to find a new job versus 54 percent in May.

-- More than half (51 percent) of workers believe that there are fewer jobs available compared to 45 percent in the previous month.

"Our most recent survey shows that Texas workers feel a bit shaky about the economy and job market," said Kim Lockhart, regional vice president for Spherion in Texas. "That's not to say that Texas is still not experiencing positive economic job growth. In fact, we continue to see a demand for skilled workers in multiple industries. Clients whose initial reaction to the nationwide economic slowdown was to halt or freeze spending are now realizing that they are no longer able to move forward without additional headcount. Opportunities certainly exist for those looking for work, especially in the technology, energy and financial-related industries."
