Novel Shares Life Story Based on Author's Husband, Family
Friday, August 23, 2019

Carole Mahanay releases 'Mahanay Brothers: Between Two Dates of Infamy'

ABILENE, Texas, Aug. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The movie "Saving Private Ryan" reminded Carole Mahanay of the many members of her husband's family who was in military service, some of them at the same time. "Will's War," a novel based on the life of author Janice Woods Windle's grandfather and told through the eyes of the women in the life of Will encouraged Mahanay to write "Mahanay Brothers: Between Two Dates of Infamy" (published by Xlibris). It shares her husband's family's story through her own eyes. For more details about the book, please visit

The novel is based on Mahanay's husband and his family. Her husband and all his brothers and his lone brother-in-law served in the military over a period of two decades, a time in which significant events took place. It tells of their humble beginnings on a 117-acre cotton farm as well as their fond memories and love of the dark, rich soil of home when they went away. The novel uses actual letters, postcards, journal entries, and pictures to tell its story while some of the actions, dialogue, and thought processes are fictionalized.

"My took tells of the life of a family as its children reach young adulthood and leave home to serve their country," Mahanay says. "The stories of six brothers and their sister's husband, whom they consider their brother, are told chronologically. The reader can note what the servicemen brothers are doing on various dates in time and can see how many of them had brushes with important events in our nation's history."

"I want readers to take away from my writing of this novel the importance of a person's story, their family's stories and their country's historic events, particularly its military campaigns. Even if a person did not engage in battle during a military operation, the fact that they served their country in a support role makes their story of no less importance than that of those who did. It is worthwhile to listen carefully to family members as they speak about their lives, no matter how mundane the stories may seem at the time. Their stories provide crucial pieces of social history for people of future generations," Mahanay adds.
