New science fiction details the horrors of mass extinction after a magnetar erupts and strikes the Earth

William de Berg announces the release of his latest book 'Shield Down'

SYDNEY, Jan. 28, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- William de Berg gives science fiction lovers a feast as he releases a new novel set in a dystopian Earth after a dangerous magnetar erupts while the Earth's magnetic shield is down. "Shield Down" (published by Trafford Publishing) also details the politics and corruption of modern-day science.

The book introduces readers to Professor James Templeton, a brilliant but maligned astrophysicist who alone predicted the eruption of SGR 0245+05, a magnetar within close galactic proximity. Dr. Jacqueline DeFazio, his former lover and head of NASA's Space Life Sciences Division, summons him to consult with the government about the prospects for a major starquake in "+05".

Templeton tours one of over 100 American underground mini-cities that were built in the preceding decade based on his scientific predictions, and is astounded by the realization that NASA and Dr. DeFazio were following up massively on his predictions of doom, even as they were attacking him in public. Almost immediately after the high-level briefing, the magnetar strikes.

With this thought-provoking theme, de Berg also addresses the crisis on modern science, which is beset with politics, financial self-interests and failure to replicate findings. He also uses this topic to highlight the gamma-ray bombardment theory of mass extinctions put forth by prominent astrobiologists.

"My novels are meant to inform, provoke and entertain," de Berg says. "[My book] is fictional but also a fact-based treatment of various topics in the 200 or so footnotes listed. Much of the scientific ideas and arguments are presented in realistic dialogue between the characters."
