'Play Works': Setting the Record Straight on Play and Its Critical Role in Education
Tuesday, October 07, 2008
TORONTO, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Whether we are two days old, two years old
or nearing our last days, we are never too old to be playful or to take
advantage of the gifts play offers to enrich our lives.
Introducing "Play Works" by Susanne T. Eden (published by AuthorHouse --
http://www.authorhouse.com), a comprehensive examination and argument for the
positive effects play has on the development and learning of young children.
Recognizing that the long-term health of a society rests upon how well
children thrive in the early years has sparked global interest in the need for
better beginnings. "Play Works" explores with its readers why play is
important, how children play, and what they learn through play. Practical
suggestions for ways in which parents, caregivers and teachers can maximize
learning through play are also included.
Throughout the pages of "Play Works," several topics are presented
including suggestions on how to establish successful "playscapes," adult's
role in play, as well as what children get out of superhero play. Eden
devotes a section of "Play Works" to examining how play works to establish a
foundation for the traditional academic subjects of reading, science, math,
technology and the arts. She challenges the long-held view of the basics and
how they are learned in the early years, including the global trend toward
imposing directed instruction in kindergarten and preschool at the expense of
play.
Eden has many practical tips in her book including such things as
selecting appropriate toys, putting together a dress-up box, creating simple
musical instruments, as well as her personal recommendation of children's book
titles.
"Play Works" is a must-read for anyone with responsibility for children
and their future.
Susanne holds Doctor of Education and Master of Education degrees from the
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, as well as a Bachelor of Arts
degree from the University of Toronto. For many years, she taught Specialist
Courses in Primary and Junior Education. She designed and taught curriculum
courses in play, language and learning for the Masters of Education Program at
York University. Susanne has traveled extensively as a speaker, staff
developer, author and consultant. Although retired, she continues to serve as
an author, consultant and staff developer to such groups as the YMCA, the
Ontario Elementary Teachers Federation, the Better Beginnings NOW CAPC and the
Learning Partnership. "Play Works" is Eden's third book.
