Socrates Project Applicants Exceed the 650 Mark
Friday, October 10, 2008
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Panopto, Inc. announced today that
over 650 institutions have applied for participation in the Socrates Project,
the company's free software program for academia.
Announced in mid-December 2007, the Socrates Project makes Panopto's
CourseCast lecture capture software available free to universities, colleges
and K-12 school districts. In return, Socrates Project members participate in
marketing and beta programs aimed at continually enhancing the technology.
CourseCast was developed and first deployed at Carnegie Mellon University in
Pittsburgh, PA.
Brad Winney, Panopto's President and CEO, said: "Interest in the Socrates
Project is accelerating, due in part to the recent turmoil in the financial
markets and its potential impact on learning technology budgets. The free
software aspect, combined with the CourseCast's hardware-independent approach,
is encouraging lecture capture adoption for a fraction of the typical cost."
Socrates Project participation involves institutions from every academic
sector, including major universities, community colleges, and K-12 school
districts. New enrollees include University of Virginia, University of North
Carolina, Cal Poly, New York Medical College, The Ohio State University,
Syracuse University, Kent State University, The University of Oklahoma,
University of Bath, Southwestern Adventist University, Loyola Marymount
University, Miami Dade College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Cornwall
Lebanon and Clark County (Athens, Ga.) school districts.
Winney added that "feedback on our fee-based services has been very
positive. As schools deploy a larger number of classrooms, guaranteed support
becomes more critical. From what customers have been telling us, our service
levels have made a real difference in their overall satisfaction with their
deployments."
