-First annual ranking includes 200 universities worldwide-
WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. News Media Group, the nation's leading source of news analysis and service journalism, today further expanded its unparalleled collection of education content with the release of its first-ever exclusive list of the World's Best Colleges and Universities, available at www.usnews.com/worldcolleges.
The World's Best Colleges and Universities rankings are based on the 2008 Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings, developed by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, one of the world's leading resources for careers and education. Using a completely different methodology and ranking data than the well-known U.S. News America's Best Colleges rankings, the World's Best Colleges and Universities rates universities on factors such as the proportion of international faculty and the proportion of international students.
"With more prospective college students looking abroad to explore higher education options, we felt it was important to present to our readers a ranking that included institutions worldwide," said U.S.News & World Report Editor Brian Kelly. "By showcasing the World's Best Colleges and Universities on our education portal, we've succeeded in providing another comprehensive, one-stop resource for students and their families."
"Furthermore, today more universities than ever are competing for the brightest students, the most recognized research faculty, and coveted research dollars," said Bob Morse, Director of Data Research for U.S. News. "Through the World's Best Colleges and Universities rankings, U.S. News helps to put these global education trends into context."
Following an in-depth methodology, the World's Best Colleges and Universities list is one of the most comprehensive of its kind, and includes the following rankings: Top 200 Universities Worldwide, the Top 30 Asian Universities, the Top 30 European Universities, the Top 20 Canadian Universities, and the Top 20 Australian and New Zealand Universities. The listing also includes the Top 50 global rankings in the fields of arts and humanities; engineering and IT; life sciences and biomedicine; natural sciences; and social sciences.
Of notable rank is Harvard University (Boston, Mass.), which earned the top ranking for universities overall. In addition, of the approximately 600 universities evaluated, nearly 60 American schools made the list for the Top 200 Universities Worldwide.
To determine the 2008 rankings, six distinct indicators of excellence were evaluated, including: Academic Peer Review, Employer Review, Student-to-Faculty Ratio, Proportion of International Faculty, Proportion of International Students, and Citations per Faculty Member.
