'Prairie Crossing': A Unique and Engaging Story of the Wild West
Wednesday, December 03, 2008

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Meet Maggie Teague, an orphaned three-year-old of superior intelligence whose casual prescience encourages grownups to think she can peer into the future. After mystifying her unschooled older brother Caleb with her exceptional knowledge and skills, Maggie keeps Caleb agile through the continuous buzz she creates wherever she goes because of her beauty and charm as a child and a prodigy. This is a story of endurance and self-sufficiency and reveals the way people of pioneer stock faced life's hardships and challenges together in the last half of the 19th century in Texas.

Author David Pershing Hull, in his new release "Prairie Crossing" (published by iUniverse -- http://www.iuniverse.com), takes classic elements of the western novel and sets them apart in a truly unique way by introducing an intricate plot line of ever-changing scenery coupled with a highly developed cast of characters.

Word sometimes has a way of spreading like wildfire in the West, and in "Prairie Crossing" the feats of Maggie the gifted child heroine spread like an inferno. Her grasp of numbers and the written word, her skill as an artist and her intuitive understanding of events, and her prescience attract both those who want to foster her development as well as some who want to profit from or exploit her unusual gifts.

"Prairie Crossing" takes place in the vast barren straights of the Llano Estacado, feared by many because of its scarcity of water, its numerous sand storms and sheer enormity. Before the coming of the railroad, thousands of cattle were taken to market through this barren wasteland. A description of its hazards and those of the cowboy life make "Prairie Crossing" a true tale of high adventure.

About the Author

Like the characters in the book, David Pershing Hull grew up in a far west rural Texas town in a home without electricity or running water. He was valedictorian of his 19-member high school class, in a school with dedicated teachers who emphasized history, the classics and poetry. He worked his way through Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and graduated top of his class. He joined the Navy in 1940 and served for six years, first as a flight instructor and then as a carrier-based combat fighter pilot. He was awarded the DFC and Air Medal. After the war, David earned an MBA from Stanford University and worked for Merrill Lynch in Houston for 33 years, as a broker, office manager and vice president. He continued flying and commanding squadrons in the Naval Reserve, retiring with the rank of Captain. He lives with his wife Diana in Santa Barbara, California. "Prairie Crossing" is the first book of a trilogy.
