New Report Details Senior Housing's COVID-fueled Tech Boom
Thursday, October 1, 2020

Operators are increasing their technology budgets to help address emerging needs during the unprecedented health crisis, according to a survey conducted by Senior Housing News and Philips.

CHICAGO, Sept. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Senior Housing News, an Aging Media Network publication, is pleased to announce the results of a new survey documenting the technology changes in senior housing resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conducted from July 30 to Aug. 17, 2020 in collaboration with health technology leader Philips, the survey gathers the opinions of more than 250 members of the Senior Housing News audience to learn more about how senior living technology efforts and spending have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and where the trends are pointing for 2021.

Among the key findings:

-- Technology budgets are on the rise, with only 20% of respondents citing
cost as the top technology infrastructure challenge for addressing
COVID-19. Expect to see a major increase in senior living tech spending
next year: 87% of respondents stated that their organizations will spend
        more on tech in 2021.
-- Many senior living leaders lack a technology plan for COVID-19, as fewer
than 30% of respondents reported that their organization has a plan in
place for appropriate technology solutions for COVID-19. The vast
majority say they have at least a general understanding of their
approach to technology in the pandemic.
-- Telehealth is booming, indicated by the close to 70% of respondents who
reported that their organization implemented telehealth since the start
        of the health crisis.

"The survey results reveal a steep rise in telehealth and other technologies in senior living, both this year and looking ahead to 2021," said Senior Housing News Editor Tim Mullaney. "Operators were already ramping up and COVID-19 has reinforced the need for technology across a number of different functions -- from resident engagement to remote monitoring."

"COVID-19 has catapulted the concept of a 'digitally enabled community' from a future north star to a resident expectation now," adds Jason Broad, Senior Living Solutions Leader, Philips. "The pandemic has strained caregiving resources and opened the door to digital tools that drive efficiency and relieve caregiver burden. This survey shows how providers are adapting to prepare for this digital community of the future."

The full survey results are available for download here.
